Scarborough and Filey Guide

Scarborough in Yorkshire is a seaside resort and fishing port with a great claim to fame. It is claimed locally that Scarborough was the first seaside resort in Britain with sea bathing starting in 1660! Bathing machines were introduced a bit later in 1733 and the resort has continued to be popular ever since.

Scarborough was certainly a favored resort in Victorian times and has many grand buildings from the period. The Spa is set on the South Bay in a prominent position. There are cliff side lifts close by to take you into the town centre when you're ready to leave the beach. South Bay with its long arc of sand is a magnificent sight when viewed from the top of  South Cliff.

There is a well protected harbour with lots of fishing and pleasure boats. There is also an abundance of restaurants, bars and cafes along the promenade to refresh the visitor. Above the town there is a medieval castle which is open every day during the summer months. You will find a lot of attractions along North Bay while South Bay is where the harbour and many commercial premises are located.

Filey

Six miles to the south of Scarborough lies the small Edwardian era town of Filey. The main attraction of Filey is its huge sandy beach which stretches for six miles south along the coast. There are good car parking facilities at the beach and the town has a good selection of hotels, cafes and amenities. There is also good walking along the coast via the Cleveland Way which leads north along the coast to Saltburn and then loops inland to the North York Moors.
