Kent Coast and
Seaside Resorts
Kent occupies a unique position in the UK as it is the
nearest part of the country to continental Europe. Such a position has lead to
its sobriquet - 'the gateway to Britain' or alternatively 'the gateway to
Europe' depending if you coming or going ! Ferries run from three Kent ports;
Dover, Folkestone and Ramsgate and of course the Channel Tunnel starts at Dover.
In spite of these major links out of the county, Kent has a great deal to offer
in its own right.
Kent has a fairly long coastline and some excellent seaside
resorts and rural towns. Folkestone is a port and resort town but the best
beaches are along the coast from the town. Dover is very much a port but does
have some good attractions for visitors. Deal is a small fishing port and
seaside resort. Margate, Ramsgate and Broadstairs are major tourist resorts
which attract many visitors from the London area and the wider south east
region. Whitstable is a small fishing village on the Thames estuary. Chatham is
a historic naval town with a long history and some great heritage sites.
